Fishing gear FAQs
Why are waders so important in fly fishing? Can’t I fish
without them?
Technically, you can definitely attempt to fish without waders if you
want to. There is nothing that exactly requires you to use waders, but
it is hard to imagine not using them. Waders do a few things for you.
First of all, they keep you dry. This is important because being dry
also means that you won’t be cold. It also means that your feet
will not get wet. Anyone who has ever tried to walk around in wet shoes
for very long knows that when feet get wet that severe itching and dryness
can occur. It is for these reasons and many others that it is important
to have waders.
How long should a fly fishing rod be?
Some do not know that fly fishing rods come in different lengths. The
reason for this is because some lengths work better for fishing in some
certain areas while other lengths are better suited for other areas.
If you are doing your fishing along a creek or in a small river, chances
are that you might be better off choosing a rod around 7-8 feet long,
since a longer one could get caught up in a tree. If you are fishing
in a reservoir or on a boat, you can probably safely be able to use
a longer rod - up to 10 feet even.
Which is more important, the rod or the fly?
Perhaps the answer to this question is not quite so simple. The fact
is that both of these items are equally important. You must have a good
rod that will be able to hold up to the pressure that is put on it.
However, at the same time if you don’t have a fly that will attract
the right kind of fish, you could be in for a long day with few - if
any - bites.
