Fly fishing reels
Fly fishing is a sport that can be much easier if you have the proper
equipment – like fly fishing reels. But the reels are not the
only pieces of equipment that are important. The rods are just as -
if not more - important.
These two items really go together like peanut butter and jelly and
the fact of the matter is they need each other. You can’t have
a rod without a reel or a reel without a rod. In order to better be
able to understand how these two items work with each other, it might
be wise to find answers to some of these questions:
• How long should the rod be?
For fishing in places like small streams or small rivers, select a
rod that is a bit shorter. A good size is around 7-9 feet long. Lighter
rods cast very light lines and allow your fly to land more delicately.
They are useful for when there are obstacles (such as trees) that could
get in your way.
On the other hand, if you fly fish in a reservoir or from a boat, you
may want to get a rod and fly fishing reels that extends to about 10
feet or so.
• Will I pay more for the rod or reel?
Most often you will be able to buy these two things together, but in
some cases you may want to mix and match rods and reels. In these cases,
you will soon find that the rod is nearly always the more expensive
piece of equipment, but it is possible that a well-made reel could end
up costing more than the rod.
Fly fishing reels and rods are the two most essential pieces of equipment
for any angler, but there is a certain level of skill that must be ascertained
as well.
